Hey everyone! It’s been ages since I updated the blog, but we’ve made a lot of progress.
In fact, the exterior is totally finished, as of a couple weeks ago!!
I would encourage you all to follow the facebook page, as I post there much more regularly! I hope to add a bit more detail about the construction steps here soon, but don’t hold your breath. I’m happy to answer any questions that you have, just ask!
Gorgeous work you two, congrats on your journey and accomplishments to this point. I’m in the process of designing, and would love to know where you purchased the large roof window? I know you mentioned in a podcast, the idea came from windows you had when you lived in France. I would love to get my hands on one, or know of a manufacturer you recommend? I appreciate it.
Hey Elena! Thanks so much for the kind words 🙂
The roof window manufacturer is Fakro; they, along with Velux, are the big roof window manufacturers available in the US. Both companies make quality products; Fakro is maybe a little less expensive and happened to have exactly what we wanted.
The exact window we ordered is the FPP-V PreSelect 44×46″, ordered from BestSkylight.com, which you can see here: http://www.bestskylight.com/roof-windows/fakro-fpl-preselect-top-hung-and-centre-pivot-window/fpl-preselect-44×46-top-hung-and-centre-pivot-window.html. It comes in several sizes. I’d definitely recommend ordering the flashing kit as well!
Hope that helps!!
how did you do the color finish on the wood? is it a colored stain? also, how did you get the different variations of each color? like the different shades of purple, are they just that many different shades you used? or different techniques? I love the purple!! I would probably paint the majority of my house that way but the metal looks awesome with it!!
Hi there! I am currently building a THOW and stumbled upon your blog when I was looking for information on flashing/trimming out windows when using corrugated metal siding. I’d really appreciate any help/info you can provide in this…your house looks great!!! Thank you! – Erika
Hey Erika! So, we pretty much flashed the windows in a standard fashion — look up any window flashing guidelines, and follow those. Once that’s finished, on to the siding. To make the metal siding meet up nicely everywhere, you’ll want some pieces called “J-channels”. We ordered these from Home Depot: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Metal-Sales-J-Channel-Flashing-in-Galvalume-4227441/204289037 (they didn’t carry them in store near us). Basically, you’re going to have J-channel everywhere that the siding ends, and you can use a pair of tin snips to cut it and fold it around corners, etc. We have furring strips (1x3s or 1x4s) all under the metal siding for the J-channels and siding panels to attach to. That’s some quick tips… if you have any specific questions, I’d be happy to help!
Thank you so much Erin! I appreciate the offer for further help, you might have a fb message from me once I start installing the siding 😉 Have a lovely day!
